What is Scottish Highland Dancing?
Scottish Dancing is sometimes called “ancient aerobics”. The two oldest dances are the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance. There are many other dances and all have an interesting history! Watch the blog for entries on those.
Highland dancing today is governed by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing. All dances, steps, and movements are specified in theory books and form the basis of the dancing curriculum. When dancers reach the Premier level, they will often create, perform, and compete in Highland choreography.
Highland dancing is incredibly athletic. Other forms of Scottish ‘folk’ dancing include Reeling, Country Dancing, and Ceilidh Dancing.
